Jim Fisher

Jim Fisher, Simon’s grandfather, was a hardworking man from the UK who moved to South Africa after World War I. Based in Johannesburg until 1955, at the age of 52, he decided to relocate his family to Zululand and start farming. He purchased the farm in 1956, when it was a small coffee plantation. Over time, he expanded the land and developed the infrastructure that you see on the farm today.

John, brother to Jane D’Aubrey and uncle to Simon D’Aubrey, was born in Johannesburg in 1944 and attended a small private school called PTS. When his parents moved to Zululand in 1956, he continued his education at Cordwalles in the Midlands and later matriculated from Michaelhouse in 1962. He then studied at Cedara Agricultural College for two years before joining the farm in 1964.

John worked on the farm until he was required to serve his mandatory military service in Bloemfontein and Zeerust. After a year in the military, he returned to the farm and continued working daily until his retirement in April 2015. John now lives in Salt Rock with his wife, Sonja. They have two children, James and Jenna, who reside in Dubai and Cape Town, respectively.

In 2016, Simon and his mother, Jane, purchased the farm. Alongside continuing the growth and harvest of sugarcane and timber, Simon began planting organic lemons in 2017 and organic avocados in early 2022. Passionate about regenerative agriculture and soil health, he aims to make the entire farm, including the sugarcane operation, more sustainable. His goal is to farm in harmony with nature and minimize the environmental impact on the land as much as possible.
