volunteer
Join us at Arcadia as we pioneer farming for the future. Collaborate with us to develop innovative, sustainable farming strategies while having some fun in the process! In 2020, Arcadia Estates became part of the World Wide Organisation of Organic Farmers (WWOOF), welcoming people from around the globe to assist in our transition towards prioritising diversity, soil management - fostering healthy soils and happy communities.
What you can expect
Working on the farm involves a variety of tasks each day. Our staff will guide you as you adjust to farm life and then support you in independent projects alongside our interns and junior manager. We provide safe and comfortable accommodation, meals, and all necessary amenities to ensure your stay at Arcadia is enjoyable.
We encourage volunteers to come in pairs, though singles are also welcome; both require advance notice and planning. Work typically starts at 6h00 and ends around 15h30, depending on the day's schedule. Evenings and weekends are yours to enjoy as you choose.
Your average day may include:
Picking lemons
Caring for avocado trees
Working in the vegetable tunnel
Making worm tea
Collecting and laying down mulch
Watering and caring for hydrangeas
Delivering produce to stores
Collaborating with our staff
Assisting Simon with special projects
Learning about organic farming
And much more!

Douglas Richardson
Doug was with us from February 2020 to July 2020 (he got stuck with us over lockdown). He studied farm management at Sarsveld, now Nelson Mandela University, George Campus. Growing up on a farm in Chiroi, Zimbabwe, Doug has a deep passion for soil science and compost.
Jayne Rimell
Jayne joined us for two weeks in June/July 2021, alongside Hanja. Having studied Biodiversity and Ecology as well as Sustainable Development, she brought a wealth of knowledge about the science behind farming. Passionate about conservation and biodiversity, Jayne was keenly interested in how farming practices impact both areas.
Sophie Anderson
Sophie Anderson joined us in June 2024 from Calgary, Canada. She is currently a Public Policy and Government Relations major at St. FX University in Nova Scotia and plays for the field hockey team. She was a great help during her time on the farm!
James Hockney
James joined us from Paarl for the October–November season in 2020 after completing his Master's in Chemical Engineering at UCT. A vegan with a passion for yoga and mindfulness, he was fascinated by soil microbiology and organic agriculture. He is now working on a farm in Wellington, Western Cape.
Hanja Fourie
Hanja, who also studied Sustainable Development, worked on the farm with Jayne for two full weeks. She is committed to learning more about organic farming and found the experience inspiring, motivating her to pursue a career in the food sector and contribute to its transformation towards greater sustainability.
